1: Tell us about Flourish in the Foreign Podcast! What was the inspiration for this podcast and what do you talk about?

Flourish in the Foreign celebrates, elevates, and affirms the voices & stories of Black women living & thriving abroad, while also exploring living abroad as a pathway to wellness. Launched in 2020, Flourish in the Foreign was shortlisted for the 2021 International Women’s Podcasting Awards and won the Black Podcasting Awards 2021 Best International Podcast award. It was included in Apple podcasts 2023 Black History Month podcast spotlight, ‘In Everything’.

The podcast delves into the unique experiences of these women and the wellness journey that living abroad offers. I was inspired to start this podcast because, during my time abroad, I was often met with questions about my reasons for being in places like Barcelona – questions my white counterparts rarely faced. I’ve met so many incredible Black women from all over the diaspora who have chosen to embrace life outside their home countries. Their stories, often overlooked by mainstream media, deserve a platform, and that’s what Flourish in the Foreign aims to provide.

2: Where have you lived and worked abroad that really meant something to you and why?

I’ve had the privilege of calling three Spanish cities my home: Logroño, La Rioja, Barcelona, and currently Valencia. Each holds a special place in my heart, but Logroño stands out. My journey through the Camino de Santiago in 2014 took me through this city, leaving me with cherished memories that only grew richer when I decided to live there.

3: What challenges have you faced along the way in your life and career? How have you overcome them?

My journey has been marked by various challenges, from adapting to different cultures to the intricate experiences of being a Black woman in foreign lands. My dedication to living a life well lived on my own terms, which included being professionally fulfilled, financially abundant, and emotionally supported, has provided the path for me to trust myself and my journey. Allowing the experiences I encounter to fortify me with the resilience and discernment to tackle challenges head-on. I’ve consistently embraced a holistic approach, seeking enduring solutions and drawing strength from my supportive community.

Presently, I’m in the midst of penning my forthcoming book, Flourish in the Foreign: A Black Woman’s Guide to Living Well Abroad. This endeavour, an intense process, has tested my resolve and confronted me with bouts of self-doubt. Yet, my drive to share the wisdom I’ve amassed from my six years in Spain and from interviewing over 100 women keeps me going. I’m passionate about shedding light on the nuances of living abroad as a pathway to wellness and offering invaluable insights, inspiration, and guidance on a topic that’s deeply personal and universally relevant.

4: Your work is centred around the voices and stories of Black women living and flourishing abroad! Can you tell us of any remarkable stories or Black women you have met that really inspired you and why?

Every story I’ve shared on Flourish in the Foreign is a testament to the strength, vulnerability, and hope of Black women. While each narrative is unique, they all resonate with themes of courage, determination, and the pursuit of a life defined on their own terms. I’ve created several thematic compilations that showcase many compelling stories in a single episode, like “Dating Abroad”, “Financial Wellness Abroad”, “Motherhood Abroad” and many more.

5: What are your top tips for thriving abroad?

To truly thrive abroad, it’s essential to approach the experience with an open mind, prioritise introspection, build a supportive community, and engage in a form of self-care that nurtures who you are and nourishes the version of yourself that you desire to become. Embrace the journey, with its highs and lows, and remember that every experience contributes to your growth. At the end of each “Flourish in the Foreign” podcast episode I have a sign-off that’s “It’s not about moving abroad. It’s not about being abroad. It’s about thriving abroad. So, go abroad and cultivate a life well lived”. Thriving abroad requires cultivation, which means a strong and clear vision, paired with intentional action. Thriving abroad doesn’t just “happen” to you, it requires deep self-knowledge and the desire to push past your comfort zone and be open to new experiences that may draw you closer to your ideal, flourishing life.

6: Where wouldn’t you recommend women to travel or live? Where have you been that you found dangerous for women?

While I believe every place has its beauty and challenges, it’s crucial for women to do thorough research and connect with local and ex-pat communities before making a move. Personal safety should always be a priority. I’ve been fortunate in my travels, but I always emphasise the importance of being informed and prepared. That being said, there isn’t a place I wouldn’t recommend for women, the world is vast and we should explore as much of it as we want. I recommend reaching out to the Girl Gone International Facebook group for your intended destination, which will provide you with first-hand accounts of safety and fun things to do.

7: What is life like running a podcast? Would you recommend it to other women?

Running a podcast is a rewarding yet demanding endeavour. It’s a platform that allows for deep connections and sharing of impactful stories. For women looking to amplify voices and narratives, podcasting can be a powerful tool. However, it requires dedication, consistency, and passion.

8: You have done a piece on trailing spouses – what advice do you have for women who are trailing spouses?

For trailing spouses, it’s critical to establish your own identity and purpose in your new environment. Seek out opportunities for personal and professional growth, build your own community, and remember that your journey is just as significant as your partners.

9: What is your favourite pastime?

When I’m not working as a Business Strategist, writing my books, or producing podcasts, you can find me in the Pilates studio, the gym, or outside hiking. I also love attending dinner parties with friends and indulging in my favourite treat – vegan pistachio ice cream.

10: Lastly, you talk about the pathway to wellness. Can you explain a bit more about this and how women can achieve overall wellness?

Wellness is a holistic journey that encompasses the mind, body, and soul. Living abroad can bea transformative experience that offers a fresh perspective on wellness. By immersing oneself in new cultures and environments, women can discover new avenues for personal growth, mental peace, and physical well-being. It’s about finding balance, embracing self-care, and prioritising ones well-being in every aspect of life.
