1. What inspired you to leave your traditional career and lifestyle to become a full-time digital nomad back in 2006?

Back in 2006, I was working as a financial planner, a career that I enjoyed but felt increasingly constrained by. The turning point came when I realised that my desire to see the world and experience new cultures couldn’t be fulfilled with “normal” vacations; I really wanted to travel long-term and in an immersive way. I decided waiting for a conventional retirement age wasn’t in the cards for me, so at the age of 30, I sold everything and bought an open-ended ticket to travel the world!

2. Can you share some core principles or tips from your Travel Smart In Style series to help women maintain a balance between affordability and comfort?

One main principle is to prioritise quality over quantity, whether in gear or accommodations. Invest in versatile, high-quality gear to save money long-term. I didn’t buy everything at once, but curated slowly over years. I also promote house-sitting and volunteering to save on accommodation costs during long travels.

3. How has the digital nomad lifestyle evolved since you started? What are key advancements or setbacks?

Access to technology and reliable internet has greatly improved, making remote work easier. However, challenges like visa issues and gentrification have increased. Despite this, digital nomad communities provide a sense of belonging and support.

4. You emphasise sustainable travel—what are your top tips for minimizing environmental impact?

Reduce single-use plastics with a zero-waste kit, support local businesses, choose eco-friendly gear and lodging, travel slowly, use public transport or bike, be mindful of resource use, and offset carbon emissions.

5. What are your top productivity tips for remote workers on the move?

  • Establish a consistent routine, including exercise and healthy nutrition to boost focus.
  • Create a dedicated workspace wherever possible.
  • Use ergonomic tools like laptop stands and Bluetooth keyboards for comfort and health.

6. Describe a memorable cultural immersion experience and its impact.

I lived for two years in the Andes apprenticing with a shaman, deeply connecting with local culture and people, which profoundly changed my perspectives and promoted compassion.

7. What safety advice do you offer solo female travelers?

  • Research destinations thoroughly, including safe areas and customs.
  • Stay connected with friends/family and share itineraries.
  • Trust instincts and remove yourself from unsafe situations.
  • Be aware of surroundings and minimise distractions.

8. How do you manage finances while traveling?

Use secure tech setups with password management, 2FA, backups, and VPNs. Track expenses and budget carefully. Build income before traveling and avoid overspending.

9. What are your favorite places to live or visit?

I love many places depending on mood and company, but Peru and New Zealand hold a special place due to their beauty and cultural richness.

10. What lessons have you learned from nearly two decades of travel?

Flexibility, adapting to challenges, and building networks are vital. Also, balance immersion in local cultures with connecting to expat communities to foster belonging and growth.
